ZFS checksums every block to detect and repair silent data corruption (bit rot). It supports instant snapshots, transparent compression, and pooled storage. It powers TrueNAS and is popular on Proxmox. ZFS benefits from ECC RAM and plenty of memory for its cache (ARC).
Its structure is worth understanding: physical disks are grouped into vdevs (a mirror or a RAID-Z group), and one or more vdevs form a pool. Redundancy lives at the vdev level, so losing an entire vdev loses the whole pool — plan the layout carefully (mirrors for VM/SSD pools, RAID-Z2 for bulk storage is a common choice). Enable compression (it's nearly free and often speeds things up), schedule monthly scrubs to verify and repair data, and keep pools below about 80% full for consistent performance. Advanced add-ons like a SLOG or L2ARC only help specific workloads, so don't add them without a reason.
