OpenMediaVault (OMV) is a Debian-based NAS solution that runs well on modest hardware, including the Raspberry Pi. It offers a clean web UI, plugins, and Docker support via a community add-on.
OpenMediaVault is the flexible, lightweight counterpart to TrueNAS. Because it is a thin layer on top of standard Debian, it runs happily on low-power hardware — an old laptop, a mini PC, or even a Raspberry Pi — and lets you mix and match filesystems (ext4, XFS, Btrfs) and drive sizes without the RAM demands of ZFS.
The web UI covers the essentials cleanly: creating shares over SMB, NFS, rsync and FTP, managing users and permissions, monitoring drive health with S.M.A.R.T., and scheduling tasks. A plugin system and the popular OMV-Extras add-on unlock more, including easy Docker and Portainer installation so your NAS can also run containers.
Choose OMV when you want a simple, resource-friendly NAS and value flexibility over ZFS's integrity guarantees — for example a Pi-based backup target or a small household file server. Choose TrueNAS instead when data integrity is the top priority and you can provide the RAM ZFS wants. Either way, pair it with a real backup strategy, since a NAS provides availability, not backups.
