RAM is the resource home servers run out of first, especially with ZFS and VMs. Buy quality modules matched to your board, and consider ECC for ZFS builds where data integrity is paramount. As a rough guide: 8 GB is enough for a light Docker-and-media setup, 16 GB is a comfortable starting point for most homelabs, and 32 GB or more makes sense once you run several virtual machines or a large ZFS pool (ZFS uses free RAM as its ARC read cache, roughly 1 GB per TB as a baseline). Check your motherboard or mini PC for the correct type (DDR4 vs DDR5), form factor (SODIMM for most mini PCs, DIMM for desktops/servers), and maximum capacity before buying. ECC (error-correcting) memory detects and fixes single-bit errors and is recommended for serious TrueNAS/ZFS builds where silent corruption must be caught — but it requires a CPU and board that support it. Plenty of reliable home servers run non-ECC RAM with good backups; ECC is a belt-and-braces upgrade, not a hard requirement.
Crucial DDR4/DDR5 SODIMM
- SODIMM for mini PCs
- Reliable
- Good value
Most mini PCs use laptop-style SODIMM memory — check DDR4 vs DDR5 for your model.
Kingston Server Premier ECC
- Error-correcting
- For ZFS/servers
- Validated modules
Choose ECC for a serious TrueNAS build where silent corruption must be caught.
